Colin Westeinde: The Furniture Designer

Furniture designer Colin Westeinde is no unfamiliar person to tricky balancing acts. The Vancouver, British Columbia local was a competitive slopestyle stunt cyclist in high school, juggling event travel with school work and tasks in construction and bike repair.

It took the needs of course work at the Rhode Island School of Design for Westeinde to develop the single-minded focus that’s getting him through his current balancing act: finishing up school, preparing to exhibit his work for the first time at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (he was chosen to be part of ICFF's 11th yearly Studio Class), and introducing a studio Co Ca with design partner Caroline Bagley. Best in show: Furniture Makers' Company

The Marks & Spencer depot behind Westfield, in the wastelands of White City, is not where you’d anticipate finding Britain’s biggest furniture designers. But once a year, this is where they convene, to participate in and judge the Design Guild Mark awards.

Now in its ninth year, the award, given by the charitable Furniture Makers' Company, identifies the best in modern design from British designers working in the UK and abroad. In 2012, the initiative saw 39 entrants spanning sectors from residential to agreement, to retail and hospitality with 19 gave the award. The winning designs go on show during London Design Festival this September.

VUUE launches Mornington furniture collection

New Australian brand VUUE has produced a collection of furniture created to be used flexibly for both indoor and outdoor spaces (+ slideshow).

The design studio of Ceci and Aydin Keyvanloo intends to "defy categorization" with its variety of seating and tables made from aluminum.

"Much of the furniture that is on the market still seems like it is meant for a certain classification and feels foreign in the others," Ceci told Dezeen. "Mornington holds up outdoors but its kind does not say 'poolside'.”

Referred to as appropriate for residential, hospitality and office environments, the Mornington collection boasts nine key products customizable in a range of products. Sixty of the 96 possible combinations can be used inside and out.
